Baxley Files to Run in New Senate District 12

The respected conservative legislator and businessman will run on a platform of limited government and protection of natural resources.

February 11, 2016

BELLEVIEW, Fla. — Today, following on the news that State Senator Alan Hays will not seek reelection, State Representative Dennis Baxley announced that he has filed the necessary paperwork to run in the newly-designated senate district 12. Prior to the Senate’s court-ordered redistricting process, Baxley had originally filed to run in what was district 5. A change in the boundaries shifted his hometown of Belleview to district 12, which includes southern Marion, Lake, and Sumter Counties. Prior to his service in the Florida House, Baxley served as Mayor of Belleview. “This district is my home. It is where I have done business, raised children, and served the public. I am honored to have the opportunity to now represent them in the state senate,” said Dennis Baxley. “Florida is on the verge of a new era of prosperity, and this district needs a senator who has the experience and leadership skills to make sure that our area is not left behind. I believe that I am the person best prepared to be that leader.” Over his many years of service in the legislature, Baxley has championed issues important to the new state senate district: job creation, protection of our water and natural resources, and defense of our constitutional rights such as the 2nd Amendment. On this issue, Baxley has an unparalleled record and is a National Defender of Freedom Award winner from the NRA. Baxley has a distinguished record as an important entrepreneur for the region. As the former CEO of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, Baxley was engaged in opening four different branches serving tens of thousands of families in the district. In addition, Baxley was the founding chairman of First Avenue National Bank, another entity that has a broad presence in the district. Baxley added: “Many candidates for this seat will claim that they can create jobs with government policy, but I’m the only one who has actually done it as a businessman. I know the best way to bring prosperity to our region is to protect our natural resources and, other than that, keep government out of the way.” Approximately 30% of the likely voters of district 12 are in Baxley’s home area of south Marion County. Approximately 23% of the likely voters are in The Villages, and the balance are in greater Lake County. The cost for this race is expected to be expensive, and Baxley already has a running head start on fundraising and organization. Baxley first served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2007, including as Speaker Pro Tem from 2006 to 2007. He was again elected to the Florida House in 2010 and was re-elected without opposition in 2012 and 2014. A highly respected conservative leader, Baxley has been a successful business owner with an extensive record of community service in his home county of Marion.
